TEFL - Teaching English as a Foreign Language

TEFL Jobs, Employment and Contracts

Once you have gained your qualification you could find yourself looking for employement either in language schools, schools and colleges within the educational system of the UK or abroad. Alternatively you might find yourself in the more specialised or industrial workplace where a knowledge of English is needed by the employees. It's possible that you will find yourself teaching children from infant age through to adults of all ages. You might find yourself teaching individuals or larger groups. However, in each scenario you will find that the lessons will usually be taught in English, even with absolute beginners. The teaching of English language is all about enabling communication. It is a rich and varied language with individual words to convey the subtle differences in meaning or implication that make it such a rewarding language to use and study. As a teacher of it as a foreign language you will be able to employ role-playing activities and opportunites for verbal expression which can then, at a later stage, be honed to more grammatical correctness through the introduction of literature and the use of language games and more formal exercises.

You will probably find that your initial contract would be for a period of one year. After that you might wish to renew, move on or take a further qualification in TEFL. You will find that salaries and working conditions will often reflect the cost of living and economy of the country to which you travel. Some contracts may include free air-fare, subsidised accommodation, and holidays, whilst others may not. Look at your contract carefully before you sign on the dotted line and commit yourself.
